1963 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002
Error
Description
Cataloged as UVC-402, DMR-009, this 1963 Proof Roosevelt Dime displays medium spread on UNITED, E PLU of PLURIBUS, and the olive branches and leaves, with light spread on STATES and ONE. Struck in 90% silver as part of the Philadelphia Mint's annual proof set, the 1963 dime is among the final silver proof issues before the composition transition in 1965. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State, identified by a small die gouge on the rim above the I of UNITED with the obverse also in EDS; Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed); and Stage C with both reverse and obverse in Late Die State. The Stage A rim gouge above the I of UNITED serves as an important early-state diagnostic, helping collectors determine where their specimen falls in the die's production timeline. Proof doubled dies are particularly sought after because the mirror-finish surfaces make the secondary hub impressions more visible than on business strikes. The medium spread across UNITED and the olive branch details produces an attractive shelf effect that is most apparent under angled lighting on the reflective proof surfaces.
