Description

Proof Roosevelt Dimes from the early 1960s are fertile territory for doubled die hunters, and this 1963 Proof issue cataloged as WDDR-018 showcases a Class I Rotated Hub variety with counterclockwise spread affecting the reverse. The doubling is concentrated in the lower half of the design, where the inscriptions USA and ONE DIME display clear secondary impressions, along with E PLURIBUS UNUM, the torch flames, and the lower olive branches. Class I doubling results from a slight rotational misalignment between hub impressions during the die manufacturing process, and the counterclockwise direction means the secondary image shifts in that rotational direction relative to the primary strike. The strongest expression of the spread appears in the lower design elements, which is consistent with rotational displacement radiating outward from the die center. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 9-R-I and Cherrypickers FS-10-1963-802 (017.5), this variety carries recognition across multiple major attribution systems. As a proof issue, this coin was struck on specially prepared planchets with polished dies, giving the doubling a particularly sharp and well-defined appearance that aids in detection under magnification.
