1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1963 Proof Roosevelt Dime WDDR-012 is identified by an extremely close spread that registers as notches on the upper letters of UNITED rather than as a broad, obvious separation. This notching effect—produced when hub doubling is so tightly concentrated that the secondary image overlaps the primary at the very tips of letterforms—demands careful examination under magnification, as casual inspection can mistake the anomaly for a planchet imperfection or die polish artifact. The affected letters in UNITED are the primary visual signature. Two reverse die markers provide independent confirmation: a small die gouge is located near the rim SSW of the first T in TRUST, and a small die gouge dot can be found between the tops of the I and T in UNITED. The latter marker is particularly useful because its proximity to the affected letters places it within the region a collector would already be examining for doubling.
