1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-013
Error
Description
Attributed by Lou Coles as Wexler 1963 WDDR-013 Proof, this Philadelphia Mint Proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on the reverse. A strong constant spread toward the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, while a closer spread appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA increasing in strength from left to right. Doubling is also visible on the right side of the Monticello building. Class II distorted hub doubling occurs when the hub is slightly deformed between successive impressions into the working die, producing a consistent directional spread across the entire die face. On the obverse, a die gouge (dot) on the lowermost front of the coat and a diagonal die scratch between the star and the 1 of the date serve as attribution markers. The reverse carries a strong die gouge on the lower right of the building and a die gouge above the right side of the M of AMERICA. As a proof issue, this coin was struck with specially prepared dies on polished planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. Jefferson Nickels are composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel.
