Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with the universal variety code UVC-1857 and die markers reference DMR-092, DDR-085 for the 1963 Jefferson nickel displays a medium spread on the letters E PLURIBUS UNUM across the reverse architrave. Three die stages have been documented for this die pair. Stage A represents early die state, identified by a small die gouge in the form of a raised dot located under the right side of the Monticello building, with the obverse also presenting in EDS condition. Stages B and C at mid and late die state remain unconfirmed, meaning that examples showing progressive die deterioration beyond the initial gouge marker have not yet been reported to the attribution community. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, with its detailed architectural rendering of Jefferson's Virginia home, provides ample fine detail for doubled die detection, and the E PLURIBUS UNUM inscription above the building is one of the most productive zones for visible doubling across the entire Jefferson nickel DDR census. The 1963 Philadelphia nickel carried a mintage of 175,776,000, a production run large enough to employ numerous die pairs but small enough that specific varieties can be scarce in higher uncirculated grades. Collectors searching for DDR-085 should begin by checking for the medium-level spread on the motto letters, then confirm attribution by locating the distinctive dot-shaped die gouge beneath Monticello's right facade.
