1963 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Eighth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1963 Jefferson nickel, WDDR-008 exhibits Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM with the distinctive characteristic of increasing slightly from left to right across the inscription — a progressive intensification that reflects the geometry of the distorted hub mechanism, where displacement varies across the die face depending on distance and direction from the distortion center. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, in continuous production since 1938, positions E PLURIBUS UNUM above the building's dome, where the inscription's horizontal span across the upper die provides a wide baseline for observing the progressive strengthening of the doubling effect. No significant obverse die markers were recorded, but the reverse offers two secondary diagnostics: die gouges positioned below the A of STATES and die scratches visible to the left of the left arch of Monticello's portico. These reverse markers provide independent confirmation of the correct working die, separate from the doubling assessment on E PLURIBUS UNUM. Philadelphia struck approximately 178.85 million nickels in 1963, a substantial pre-coinage-shortage output that preceded the 1965-1967 period when mintmarks were removed from all denominations. The left-to-right intensification pattern on E PLURIBUS UNUM means the doubling is weakest on the E at far left and strongest on the final M of UNUM at far right, providing a built-in self-verification: if the doubling appears uniform across the inscription rather than progressively strengthening rightward, the specimen may represent a different variety. Collectors should examine E PLURIBUS UNUM under 15-20x magnification, starting from the right side where the doubling is strongest, while using the die gouges below A and the arch die scratches as confirming landmarks.
