Description

Submitted by Keith Christenson and attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1963-D 25¢ WRPM-002), this Denver Mint Washington Quarter shows a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark. Obverse diagnostics: thin N/S and NW/SE die scratches throughout, NW/SE die scratch in front of chin, die gouge left of 6 in date, small die scratch at right center of 6. Reverse diagnostics: thin N/S die scratches throughout, strong die gouges through eagle's neck, die gouges above left claw, strong die scratch far below U in UNITED, strong die scratches connecting bottoms of TE in QUARTER, small die gouge at right center of mintmark. Struck in 1963 — the penultimate year of 90% silver circulating quarters before the Coinage Act of 1965 — this variety combines the appeal of silver composition with a well-documented tilted repunch on a late-era silver Washington Quarter.
