1963-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Discovered by John Conway, the 1963-D WDDR-007 Jefferson Nickel features Class II distorted hub doubling with a very close spread showing on the upper portions of the letters of E Pluribus Unum. Carrying the Wexler Variety designation 1963-D WDDR-007, this Denver Mint variety has no notable obverse die markers, directing the cherrypicker's attention entirely to the reverse. A prominent die scratch runs south through the C of AMERICA toward the rim, while another passes northeast through the left lower corner of the E in FIVE. A horizontal die scratch cuts through the lower portions of URIB in PLURIBUS, creating a distinctive cross-cutting pattern among the legend lettering. Conway's identification of the upper-portion-only spread on E Pluribus Unum illustrates the kind of precise observation required to distinguish Class II hub doubling from other forms of die doubling.
