Description

Carrying a complex renumbering history, this 1962 Jefferson Nickel regular strike doubled die reverse was formerly listed as WDDR-157 and replaces the original WDDR-014 listing, which was delisted after being reclassified as a doubled working hub (see WWHR-001). Class II distorted hub doubling shows on E PLURIBUS and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with all spreads increasing from left to right — a directional pattern opposite to the left-to-right decrease seen on some other Class II varieties from this date. Die markers on the reverse include a die scratch above FIVE and a die scratch below LO of MONTICELLO; no obverse markers have been noted. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar under Wexler Variety ID: 1962 WDDR-014, the distinction between this doubled die reverse and the original listing’s doubled working hub classification (WWHR-001) is significant: a doubled working hub affects all dies made from that hub, while a doubled die is unique to a single working die. This reclassification refined the catalog’s accuracy for the prolific 1962 Jefferson Nickel die variety population.
