Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar with Wexler Variety ID 1962 WDDR-006, this Class II (Distorted Hub) doubled die reverse was formerly listed as WDDR-158 and replaces the original WDDR-006 listing, which was delisted because the doubling was considered too minor to warrant separate cataloging. The reassignment of this stronger variety to the WDDR-006 designation ensures the numbering system reflects genuinely collectible doubled dies. The doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the spread decreasing from left to right across the inscriptions. Reverse die markers include a slanted die scratch below the E of E PLURIBUS and die scratches through the letters BUS of PLURIBUS. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. This variety appears on the 1962 Jefferson nickel from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter. Felix Schlag's design, which won a public competition in 1938, features Thomas Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and his architectural masterpiece Monticello on the reverse. The Distorted Hub doubling mechanism occurs when the hub shifts slightly between multiple impressions during the die manufacturing process, producing a consistent pattern of displacement that is strongest on one side and diminishes across the design field.
