1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-027
Error
Description
Twenty-seven doubled die reverses documented for the 1962 Jefferson Nickel Original Design series attest to the extensive die variety research conducted on this workhorse denomination, and DDR-027 shows light spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM with very light spread extending to UNITED STATES. The graduated intensity — stronger on the motto than on the country name — suggests a subtle hub displacement that produced its most visible effects on the design elements closest to the shift axis. VarietyVista tracks this variety under UVC-1104 and DMR-035 across three die stages: Stage A in Early Die State is unconfirmed, Stage B shows both reverse and obverse in Mid-Die State, and Stage C reaches Late Die State though also unconfirmed. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design, in continuous use since 1938, features the portico and dome of Jefferson's Virginia estate alongside the legend elements where the doubling is most apparent on this variety. The 1962 date falls within the era when Philadelphia struck nickels without mintmarks (the P mintmark was not added to nickels until 1980), and the light nature of the spread places DDR-027 firmly in the minor variety category where magnification of at least 5x is recommended for confident identification.
