1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-018
Error
Description
Progressively increasing spread from left to right across the reverse distinguishes this 1962 Jefferson Nickel DDR-018, with medium doubling visible on PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES OF AMERICA that strengthens as it moves rightward across the inscriptions. This directional gradient indicates the hub displacement pivoted from a point on the left side of the die, concentrating the greatest separation between primary and secondary images on the right-side letters. Die markers UVC-1095 and DMR-026 identify the variety within the VarietyVista catalog system for this regular strike. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B at Mid Die State is also unconfirmed, and Stage C shows both the reverse and obverse reaching Late Die State — the only confirmed stage, suggesting most known examples come from later in the die's production run. Eighteen cataloged doubled die reverses for the 1962 Jefferson Nickel reflects the extensive variety research applied to early 1960s nickel production, when Philadelphia and Denver facilities were producing hundreds of millions of nickels annually with numerous die pairs cycling through service.
