1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-016

Description

Cataloged under UVC-1093 and DMR-024, this 1962 Jefferson Nickel DDR-016 features a strong spread of doubling on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS on the reverse — three of the most visually prominent inscription areas on the Monticello reverse design. Stage progression extends through at least Stage B, at which point a die scratch becomes visible near the rim, running from the Y of LIBERTY to the 6 of the date on the obverse. This Stage B marker provides a reliable anchor for attributing mid-to-late die state examples when the reverse doubling has softened slightly from die wear. Jefferson Nickels of 1962 were struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition for business strikes, and DDR-016 is cataloged in the VarietyVista reference as part of the well-documented doubled die reverse series for this date.
