1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-014

Description

Exhibiting an unusual combination of triple and double spread, the 1962 DDR-014 is a Jefferson nickel doubled die reverse cataloged as UVC-1091 DMR-022 in the VarietyVista system. The reverse shows light triple spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA alongside a double spread on UNUM, indicating that the hub impression process involved at least three distinct positions for portions of the legend. Triple spread varieties are considerably less common than standard doubled dies, as they require additional hub misalignment events beyond the typical single offset. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A places the reverse at early die state with a die gouge dot on the front of the forehead serving as an obverse early die state marker. Stage B, the mid-die state, and Stage C, the late die state, both remain unconfirmed. The die gouge dot on the forehead provides a useful obverse pickup point that can alert collectors to examine the reverse for the triple spread before investing time in detailed magnification. This variety rewards patient examination of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend, where the three distinct impressions create a layered effect on the affected letters.
