1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1088 and DMR-019, DDR-011 on the 1962 Jefferson Nickel displays a medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and OF AMERICA — two of the principal reverse inscriptions flanking Felix Schlag's Monticello rendering. Three die stages have been identified: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows die scratches running north-to-south on the upper right side of the reverse with the obverse also in mid die state, and Stage C shows both the reverse and obverse in late die state. The progression from early through mid to late die state documents the full working life of this particular die, with the north-south die scratches appearing at Stage B providing the most reliable attribution checkpoint for confirmed specimens. The 1962 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition — 75% copper and 25% nickel — weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. Produced during the post-war era, this coin falls within the period when Philadelphia was producing both business strikes and proof issues, though this particular die appears to have served business strike production based on the die-state progression described. The medium spread classification on EPU and OF AMERICA indicates doubling visible under 5-8x magnification, placing this variety in the moderately collectible range where the doubled letters are clear enough for confident identification but require some optical assistance to fully appreciate.
