1962 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista under internal code UVC-1087 and die marriage reference DMR-018, this 1962 Jefferson Nickel presents a medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the MO of MONTICELLO, with the doubling intensity decreasing from left to right across each inscription. This directional diminishment pattern reveals the geometry of the hub misalignment: the maximum displacement occurred at the left end of the affected zone and progressively tapered toward the right, consistent with a pivoted or rotated secondary hub impression. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state with a light die scratch extending east from the upper I of FIVE and the obverse at MDS, and Stage C where both reverse and obverse are at late die state. The progression through all three stages from EDS to LDS indicates this die pair was used extensively before being retired, allowing collectors to find specimens across the full spectrum of die wear. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1962 as a proof issue, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The 1962 proofs were produced using polished dies and planchets, creating mirror-like fields against which even medium-strength doubling becomes distinctly visible. The light die scratch east from the upper I of FIVE in Stage B provides a readily identifiable die marker that develops during the mid-production lifespan of this die, allowing collectors to determine die state by the presence or absence of this specific scratch when examining potential DDR-010 candidates.
