1961 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-011
Error
Description
One of the more visually impactful DDR varieties in the Roosevelt silver dime census, DDR-011 for the 1961 issue displays strong spread across an unusually broad range of reverse design elements: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM, both olive and oak stems, and the lower torch. VarietyVista catalogs this under UVC-765 with die markers reference DMR-016, and the breadth of the doubling — spanning inscriptions, botanical elements, and the central device simultaneously — suggests a substantial misalignment between hub impressions during the die-making process. Three die stages are documented. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed, meaning the sharpest possible examples have not been positively attributed. Stage B places both reverse and obverse in early-to-mid die state (EMDS), a transitional condition where initial die freshness is beginning to yield to wear but significant deterioration has not yet developed. Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed. The 1961 Philadelphia Roosevelt dime mintage of 93,730,000 represents one of the larger production runs in the silver dime era, providing substantial opportunity for varieties to emerge from the many die pairs employed. The strong spread on both stems and the lower torch is particularly notable because these botanical elements — olive for peace, oak for strength — carry fine vein and leaf detail that amplifies even moderate hub misalignment into clearly visible separation lines, making DDR-011 an appealing specimen for collectors who favor varieties with strong visual presence.
