Description

Paired with the independently cataloged WDDO-005, WDDR-003 of the 1961 Proof Washington Quarter creates a dual-variety die pairing where both sides carry hub-doubling features. The obverse paired die, WDDO-005, displays a spread toward the south on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date, making these the primary diagnostic elements for identifying the obverse component. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found to the left of the upper A in QUARTER, serving as a confirming die marker for attributing the reverse variety. Dual-variety proof dies are particularly noteworthy because proof production runs are far smaller than business-strike runs, making any proof variety inherently scarcer, and a die carrying doubling on both sides compounds the significance. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1961 25c Pr WDDR-003. The 1961 Proof Washington Quarter was struck exclusively at Philadelphia from specially prepared dies for annual proof sets, in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams. This dual-variety proof quarter documents reverse hub doubling on a die independently paired with WDDO-005, whose southward spread on motto and date provides the obverse diagnostic.
