Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1961 25¢ Pr WDDR-001, this proof Washington Quarter features a doubled die reverse paired with an obverse die independently cataloged as WDDO-003 — a very minor doubled die obverse showing an extremely close centripetal spread on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. This dual-variety die marriage means both sides of coins from this die pair display hub doubling: the primary reverse DDR and the accompanying obverse DDO. The extremely close spread on the obverse IN GOD WE TRUST and date registers as subtle thickening rather than clearly separated doubling, consistent with the variety's "very minor" classification. No significant reverse die markers have been documented beyond the doubling itself. Proof Washington Quarters of 1961 were struck at the Philadelphia Mint during a period of rapidly expanding proof set production, and dual DDO/DDR die marriages from proof coinage represent particularly interesting collecting opportunities because the controlled proof striking process preserves fine doubling details on both sides. The WDDO-003 obverse pairing adds value to this noteworthy proof DDR variety.
