1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Proof doubled die reverse on the 1961 Philadelphia Roosevelt Dime, catalogued under Wexler Variety ID 1961 10c Pr WDDR-003. Proof dimes of this era were struck in 90% silver with sharply mirrored fields, making doubled die separations especially visible under proper lighting. The spreading is toward the center and affects UNITED STATES, the E and PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM, the flame at the top of the torch, the upper left leaves, and ONE. Strong notching — the stepped separation from Class IV hub doubling — is visible on UNITED, making it the primary identification point. Die markers confirm attribution through two stages. Stage A obverse: small NE/SW die scratches at IN GOD WE TRUST and at the point of the bust. Stage B obverse: a small die dot centered between the first T and R of TRUST. Stage A reverse: a short die scratch in the field to the right and slightly below center of the I in UNITED. Stage B reverse: a die chip at the lower left of the D in UNITED and a die chip at the lower left of the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM.
