Description

Bearing a revised catalog history, this 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse was formerly listed as WDDR-098 before being reassigned to replace the original WDDR-023 listing, which was delisted because it proved to be a doubled working hub rather than a true doubled die. Discovered by Francis J. Laliberte, Jr., the current WDDR-023 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA that decreases from left to right. This graduated reduction follows the geometry of the hub distortion, with greatest misalignment at the leftmost letters diminishing as the inscription curves around the reverse. Reverse die markers include a heavy dot gouge on the rim below ED of UNITED and STAT of STATES, along with die scratches on the rim above E and P of E PLURIBUS. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1961 WDDR-023 Proof, this variety's reassignment from WDDR-098 illustrates the ongoing catalog maintenance that keeps the Wexler files accurate as varieties are reclassified upon closer examination.
