1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Attributed by Gary G. Wagnon and cataloged as 1961 WDDR-005 Proof in the Wexler files, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling with a pronounced spread toward the center visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, plus closer spread on the MO of MONTICELLO and both sides of the Monticello building facade. All spreads decrease slightly from left to right across the inscriptions, a diagnostic gradient indicating the hub displacement vector's relationship to each letter's angular position on the die face — with leftmost elements experiencing maximum separation and rightmost elements showing progressively less. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge within the upper right portion of the W of WE. Reverse markers feature a slanted die gouge above the lower bar of the second L of MONTICELLO and two die scratches extending from the upper right vertical bar of the N of CENTS that form a distinctive V shape — a particularly useful attribution point given its unique geometry. As a proof strike, this coin was produced at the Philadelphia Mint on specially prepared planchets using polished dies, creating mirror-like fields that enhance the visibility of even subtle doubling against the reflective surface. The Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag with the Monticello reverse, was struck in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. The "Nice spread toward the center" characterization in the Class II classification indicates convergent doubling where the secondary hub impression shifted inward, pushing doubled elements toward the coin's center rather than toward the rim — a direction that produces doubling on the interior side of the primary lettering requiring attentive examination under magnification.
