1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-016
ErrorDescription
Combining two distinct doubling classes, WDDR-016 on the 1961 proof Jefferson nickel displays both Class II (Distorted Hub) and Class V (Pivoted Hub) doubling — a close spread visible on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the second O of MONTICELLO. Class II produces distortion-based secondary images from an irregular hub surface, while Class V adds a rotational component from a pivoted hub, and their convergence on a single die creates a complex doubling signature that experienced attributors recognize as more intricate than either class alone. This proof die also pairs with a doubled obverse: the obverse is listed as 1961 Pr 5c WDDO-004, meaning collectors holding this coin may find doubling on both sides. Reverse die markers include a die gouge inside the left portion of the O in OF and a die dot below the lower right side of the M of UNUM. As a proof issue from the Philadelphia Mint, this coin was struck multiple times on polished planchets, and the mirror-like fields can actually help reveal close doubling that might be invisible on frosty business strike surfaces.
