1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-015

Description

Formerly cataloged as WDDR-101 before renumbering, the 1961 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-015 is a Class II distorted hub doubled die reverse that replaced a previously delisted doubled working hub entry. Attribution is in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 1961 WDDR-015 Proof. Doubling appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with displacement decreasing from left to right across the reverse legend. Die markers provide authentication beyond the doubling: the reverse carries a die dot on the left side of the Monticello dome and a die scratch running along the rim below the first S of STATES. The dome-area die dot is locatable under magnification even when the reverse legend doubling is subtle, providing a central-design marker removed from the legend zone. No obverse die markers are noted. Collectors searching older references may find this variety as WDDR-101; the current designation is WDDR-015. The 1961 Jefferson Nickel proof coinage was struck at Philadelphia, and the Monticello reverse designed by Felix Schlag provides the architectural and legend elements across which Class II doubling distributes.
