1961 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint, WDDR-006 on the 1961 Jefferson Nickel exhibits close Class II distorted hub doubling on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Proof dies undergo a more meticulous preparation process than business strike dies, yet they remain susceptible to the same hubbing anomalies that produce doubled dies—the distorted hub mechanism operates during die manufacture, before the die enters the press room. Die markers on the reverse include a die dot above the M of UNUM, a vertical die gouge to the upper right of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a die gouge to the right of the second A of AMERICA. No significant obverse die markers have been noted.
