1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005
Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista, RPM-005 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a D/D/D triple-punched repunched mintmark variety showing displacement to the north on both secondary punches. The repunching direction of D/D/D North, North indicates that the mintmark punch was applied three times with each successive impression landing slightly above the intended final position, leaving traces of the earlier strikes visible beneath or alongside the primary mintmark. This variety is tracked under UVC-773 with a single die marriage record, DMR-010, and three documented die stages that trace the working die from its earliest known impressions through advanced deterioration. Stage A is classified as Early Die State (EDS), though this designation remains unconfirmed, indicating that while specimens consistent with early die characteristics have been observed, a definitive EDS example has not yet been firmly verified. Stage B carries a Mid Die State (MDS) classification, also unconfirmed, representing the middle portion of the die's operational life where moderate wear would be expected on the die surface. By Stage C, the obverse has reached Late Die State (LDS), confirmed by the appearance of a die scratch running from the D of UNITED to the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM — a diagnostic marker indicating significant die surface fatigue that typically accompanies the late phase of a working die's service life.
