Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1961-D 1¢ WRPM-014, this repunched mintmark variety on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent carries cross-references from CONECA as RPM #69, from Coppercoins as 1961D-1MM-069, and from Crawford as Top 100 RPM: Wexler. The high CONECA number of RPM #69 places it well into the expanded catalog of 1961-D varieties that have been documented as the series’ roster has grown over decades of collector research. That the same variety received a much lower Wexler number (WRPM-014) while CONECA assigned #69 reflects the different chronological order in which these attribution organizations cataloged the variety — a common occurrence when multiple independent teams document the same die varieties using their own discovery sequences. The discrepancy between numbering systems is precisely why cross-referencing is so valuable: a collector searching for CONECA RPM #69 and another looking for Wexler WRPM-014 can confirm they are examining the same variety by consulting the cross-reference tables. During the early 1960s, the Denver Mint was producing Lincoln cents at a scale that taxed die production capacity, and the manual mintmark punching process inevitably generated a substantial population of repunched mintmark dies. WRPM-014 is one result of that high-volume production environment, and its documentation across three attribution systems confirms its place in the canon of recognized 1961-D RPM varieties.
