Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, RPM-035 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent stands out among the series’ repunched mintmark varieties for the remarkable breadth of its die stage documentation. Tracked across three separate die marriage records — DMR-048 (UVC-811), DMR-098 (UVC-3513), and DMR-049 (UVC-812) — seven die stages lettered A through G chronicle an obverse die that outlasted two reverse dies and accumulated a wide spectrum of deterioration markers before final retirement. Under the first pairing (DMR-048, UVC-811), Stage A presents Early Die State (EDS) diagnostics: a small die gouge running north-south in the lower shoulder fold and light die scratches running northeast-southwest through ERT of LIBERTY, with the reverse at MDS. Stage B advances to Early-Mid Die State (EMDS) on the obverse, with two die chips appearing on the left baseline at LMDS and a die chip outline forming on the right cornice. When the reverse was changed (DMR-098, UVC-3513), Stage C shows the obverse at MDS paired with a fresh EDS reverse. Stage D finds the obverse at LMDS with a die chip on the right cornice at MDS. Stage E continues at LMDS on the obverse, introducing die gouges through the right leg of the R of AMERICA at MDS. A second reverse change (DMR-049, UVC-812) yields Stage F, where the obverse has reached LDS and a fresh EDS reverse shows light die scratches through lower ONE CENT. The terminal Stage G records a light die crack on the forehead at LDS, a light die crack running north-south on the shoulder, and die gouges nearly worn away at MDS. The three die marriages and seven stages make RPM-035 one of the most extensively tracked obverse dies in the 1961-D cent series.
