1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-031
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista as UVC-807 with die marriage record DMR-044, RPM-031 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a D/D/D triple-punched repunched mintmark with displacement to the north on both secondary punches. Three die stages provide a straightforward record of the die's operational life. Stage A records both the obverse and reverse in Early Die State (EDS), representing the die pair at their freshest and the point at which the triple-punched mintmark would display its most pronounced secondary impressions. Stage B carries an unconfirmed Mid Die State (MDS) classification, indicating the intermediate period of die service where moderate wear would be expected to begin softening the secondary mintmark evidence. Stage C carries an unconfirmed Late Die State (LDS) classification for the terminal production phase. The unconfirmed status of both Stages B and C means that while specimens consistent with these die state classifications have been observed, definitive examples firmly establishing the boundary between mid and late states have not yet been verified for this particular variety. Collectors examining specimens of RPM-031 should focus on the clarity of the northward secondary mintmark displacement as a primary attribution criterion, keeping in mind that the triple-punch direction of D/D/D North, North places this variety in the same directional family as RPM-005, RPM-007, and several other north-displaced varieties in the 1961-D series, requiring careful comparison of secondary positioning and die stage markers to distinguish between them.
