Description

Spanning two die marriage records — DMR-042 (UVC-805) and DMR-096 (UVC-3400) — RPM-029 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a D/D East repunched mintmark variety documented by VarietyVista through five die stages. The D/D East direction indicates a double-punched rather than triple-punched mintmark, with the secondary impression displaced to the east of the primary D. Under the first pairing (DMR-042, UVC-805), Stage A carries an unconfirmed EDS classification. Stage B advances to Early-Mid Die State (EMDS), identified by a die scratch running south from the S of TRUST and a small die chip at the right eave tip — both at EMDS. Stage C records the obverse die scratch as weak but still visible at Late-Mid Die State (LMDS), accompanied by a small die chip at the left base tip, also at LMDS. The gradual fading of the TRUST die scratch from clearly visible at Stage B to weak at Stage C illustrates the progressive erosion of die surface features under sustained production pressure. When the reverse was changed (DMR-096, UVC-3400), Stage D shows the obverse at LMDS with a fresh MDS reverse, adding die chips at the left base tip and left upper base. The terminal Stage E carries an unconfirmed LDS classification. The two die marriages confirm the obverse outlasted its initial reverse pairing, and the fading TRUST die scratch provides a useful staging diagnostic for collectors attributing specimens of this variety.
