Description

Encompassing seven die stages across two die marriage records — DMR-037 (UVC-800) and DMR-038 (UVC-801) — RPM-025 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a repunched mintmark variety that document an extended service life through two reverse die pairings. Under the first pairing (DMR-037, UVC-800), Stage A records both the obverse and reverse in Early Die State (EDS), representing the die's freshest known impressions. Stage B advances both sides to Mid Die State (MDS) without notable diagnostic markers beyond general wear characteristics. Stage C (LMDS obverse) introduces a depression at the right eave at LMDS. When the reverse was changed (DMR-038, UVC-801), Stage D shows a die crack on the forehead at LDS with a fresh MDS reverse. Stage E provides a distinctive diagnostic: the date and mintmark appear thinner due to abrading at LDS — evidence that Mint personnel polished the die surface, reducing the relief of the date and mintmark digits. The reverse at this stage shows light die cracks on columns 1 and 2 at MDS, along with minute die chips on columns 11 and 12. Stage F advances the obverse to Very Late Die State (VLDS) with a die chip at the left base tip at LDS. The terminal Stage G reveals a die chip in the upper R of LIBERTY at VLDS, with the reverse also at VLDS. The abrading evidence at Stage E is a particularly valuable diagnostic, as the visibly thinned date and mintmark distinguish mid-to-late state specimens of this variety from those of other 1961-D RPMs.
