1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-023
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista as UVC-798 with die marriage record DMR-035, RPM-023 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a D/D/D triple-punched repunched mintmark displaced to the east on the serifs. Three die stages record the die's progression through an extensive accumulation of reverse die chips and breaks. Stage A places the obverse in Early Die State (EDS), while the reverse already exhibits a light die scratch under the BUS of PLURIBUS at MDS and a die chip on the right cornice — suggesting the reverse die had seen prior service before this pairing. By Stage B, the obverse has advanced to MDS while the reverse has deteriorated dramatically: a die chip at the left upper base at LDS, the PLURIBUS die scratch worn away, a depression under the left base, a die chip on the left base, a small die chip at the left base tip, a die chip between the lower ED of UNITED, a die chip on column 1, and a die chip on the lower O of ONE. This concentration of eight distinct reverse anomalies at a single die stage is exceptional. Stage C (LDS obverse) introduces a die crack on the forehead and a die crack on the shoulder, while the reverse shows a die break in the upper O of ONE at VLDS, a die break at the left upper base, a die chip on column 2, and a depression at the right eave. The sheer density of reverse damage across Stages B and C makes RPM-023 one of the most heavily deteriorated reverse die pairings in the 1961-D RPM series.
