Description

Spanning three die marriage records and seven die stages, RPM-022 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent represents one of the most extensively paired obverse dies in the series. Cataloged by VarietyVista under DMR-032 (UVC-795), DMR-033 (UVC-796), and DMR-034 (UVC-797), the repunching shows a D/D/D triple-punched mintmark displaced to the east on the lower serif. The three die marriages confirm the obverse die outlasted two reverse dies, requiring two successive replacements during its operational life. Under the first pairing (DMR-032, UVC-795), Stage A records light die scratches under the bust and a reverse at EDS. Stage B advances to EMDS with a depression at the right eave. When the first reverse was changed (DMR-033, UVC-796), Stage C shows the obverse at MDS with a fresh MDS reverse, a small die chip on column 12, and a light die crack on the right cornice. Stage D (LMDS) reveals a depression forming at the right eave on the new reverse. The third pairing (DMR-034, UVC-797) begins at Stage E, where the die scratches under the bust have worn away at LMDS and a fresh EDS reverse has been installed. Stage F (LDS obverse) brings a die crack on the forehead, die chips on columns 1 and 11 at EMDS, a die break on column 12, a die break at the right eave, and a die chip on the right cornice. The terminal Stage G (VLDS) adds a die crack in the hair and a stronger forehead die crack, with the reverse at MDS. The recurring right eave damage across multiple reverse dies suggests a persistent press alignment characteristic.
