1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-012
Error
Description
Recorded by VarietyVista as UVC-781 with die marriage record DMR-018, RPM-012 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a repunched mintmark variety documented through four die stages that record a progressive sequence of reverse die failures concentrated around the Memorial building's architectural details. Stage A places the die in Early-Mid Die State (EMDS), where the secondary mintmark shows to the north and the reverse has reached MDS. By Stage B, the obverse has advanced to MDS while the reverse exhibits an accelerating pattern of damage at Late-Mid Die State (LMDS): a depression has formed at the right eave, a die chip has appeared on the E of UNITED, and die cracks have developed on Memorial columns 1, 2, 11, and 12 — an unusually comprehensive set of columnar failures affecting both the leftmost and rightmost structural elements of the building design. Stage C sees the obverse reach LMDS as the right eave depression escalates to a full die break at LDS, accompanied by a die chip on the lower E of AMERICA. The terminal Stage D finds the obverse at LDS with the culminating failure: a die break in the lower C of AMERICA at Very Late Die State (VLDS). The four-stage arc from eave depression to eave break to lettering breaks documents how structural failure in one area of the reverse die — the right eave — progressively propagated to affect the surrounding AMERICA lettering, reflecting the interconnected stress patterns within the die steel.
