1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010
Error
Description
One of the most thoroughly documented varieties in the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent RPM series, RPM-010 is cataloged by VarietyVista across two die marriage records — DMR-015 (UVC-778) and DMR-016 (UVC-779) — with seven die stages spanning the letters A through G. The presence of two die marriages confirms that the obverse die outlasted its first reverse die and was paired with a replacement, a circumstance that extended the die's production run and generated a richer die stage record. Under the first pairing (DMR-015, UVC-778), Stage A identifies the secondary mintmark showing to the north in Early-Mid Die State (EMDS), accompanied by a short die gouge in the fold of the shoulder and a reverse at MDS. Stage B introduces thin die cracks in the hair and on the shoulder at MDS, with the reverse remaining at MDS. Stage C shows the obverse at MDS while the reverse reveals die chips between the RI of AMERICA at Late-Mid Die State (LMDS), along with die chips on column 1 and a die crack on column 2. Stage D finds a die chip on the lower R of LIBERTY at LMDS with the reverse at LDS. Stage E presents a long die crack in the hair at LMDS and a die break at the left eave at LDS. When the reverse die was changed (DMR-016, UVC-779), Stage F shows the obverse at LMDS paired with a fresh MDS reverse. Stage G reveals that the secondary mintmark is now visible only inside the main mintmark at LDS, accompanied by a heavy die crack in the hair, numerous east-west die scratches on the obverse, and die chips on column 1 at LMDS. The seven-stage progression across two die marriages provides an unusually detailed record of die deterioration.
