1961-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009
Error
Description
VarietyVista documents RPM-009 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent as UVC-777 with die marriage record DMR-014, recording a D/D/D triple-punched repunched mintmark displaced to the northwest with the secondary impression showing on the upper serif of the mintmark. The direction D/D/D Northwest, upper Serif distinguishes this variety from the predominantly north- and east-displaced RPMs in the 1961-D series, as the northwest angle places the secondary mintmark evidence in a slightly different position relative to the primary D. Three die stages document the progression from initial production through late deterioration. Stage A carries an unconfirmed Early Die State (EDS) classification, representing the earliest known specimens. Stage B advances to Mid Die State (MDS), where the secondary mintmark appears light but complete — meaning the full outline of the secondary D impression remains traceable even as die wear has reduced its prominence. The reverse has also reached MDS at this point. By Stage C, the die has deteriorated to Late Die State (LDS), and the secondary mintmark has faded to very light visibility, approaching the threshold beyond which attribution becomes difficult. The reverse at this stage reveals small die chips on Memorial columns 11 and 12. The contrast between the "light and complete" secondary mintmark at Stage B and the "very light and fading" impression at Stage C underscores the narrow window during which this variety's diagnostic features are most readily confirmed.
