Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-774 with die marriage record DMR-011, RPM-006 on the 1961-D Lincoln Memorial Cent is a repunched mintmark variety exhibiting three documented die stages that chronicle the gradual diminishment of the secondary mintmark impression as die wear progressed. Stage A presents the die in Early Die State (EDS), though this classification remains unconfirmed — the secondary mintmark would be at its most visible in this earliest phase, before striking pressure and normal die erosion began to erase the evidence of repunching. By Stage B, the die has reached Mid Die State (MDS), where the secondary mintmark shows at medium strength and the reverse has also progressed to MDS condition. The relationship between die state and secondary mintmark visibility is clearly demonstrated at this stage: enough wear has occurred to reduce the repunching evidence, but the secondary impression remains identifiable. Stage C reveals the culmination of this progressive erasure — the secondary mintmark has faded to very light visibility as the die reaches Late Die State (LDS), with the reverse similarly advanced to LDS. This three-stage sequence provides an instructive example of how die wear systematically diminishes the diagnostic features that variety collectors rely upon for attribution, making early die state specimens of this variety considerably more desirable for their stronger display of the repunching characteristics.
