Description

Medium extra thickness appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the E PLU of PLURIBUS, ONE, and the left stem of the torch and olive branch on this 1960 Roosevelt Silver Dime DDR-004. John R. Sinnock's reverse design, featuring a torch flanked by an olive branch and an oak branch, provides fine detail where hub doubling manifests as thickened lines rather than the separated secondary images seen on bolder varieties. Die markers tracked under UVC-354 and DMR-023 record three stages with an unusual progression: Stage A and Stage B both remain unconfirmed at Early Die State and Mid Die State respectively, while Stage C — where both reverse and obverse reach Late Die State — is the confirmed stage. This inverted confirmation pattern suggests the variety was initially documented from well-circulated or late-stage specimens, with earlier die states awaiting discovery. Philadelphia struck 72,081,602 Roosevelt Dimes in 1960, continuing the silver composition that would persist through 1964. The "extra thickness" doubling on lettering is characteristic of close-spread hub displacement where the secondary impression nearly overlaps the primary, creating wider-than-normal strokes rather than distinct separated images. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-004 rewards careful examination of the legend lettering under magnification.
