1960 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Third documented doubled die reverse for the 1960 proof Roosevelt Dime, DDR-003 shows a light spread on UNITED STATES, ONE, and the left leaves and branches. Cross-referenced as UVC-353 and DMR-022, this proof variety has been tracked through three die stages: Stage A shows a die scratch on the rim above the E of STATES in early die state with the obverse also in early die state, Stage B at mid-die state is unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state is unconfirmed. As a proof issue, this coin was struck at Philadelphia on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements for collectors. Doubled dies on proof coinage carry particular significance because proof dies received extra care in preparation, making hub doubling errors less expected than on business strikes. The 1960 proof Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver composition, part of the final era of silver proof sets before the transition to clad coinage after 1964. The light spread requires careful examination under magnification, and the die scratch above E of STATES at Stage A provides a helpful secondary attribution marker.
