Description

Strong directional spread toward the center shows on the abbreviations USA and EPU, as well as on QUARTER DOLLAR, the laurel wreath, and both lower wings of the heraldic eagle on this 1960 proof Washington quarter. CONECA cross-references this as 2-R-II, and the Cherrypickers guide lists it as FS-25-1960-801, while the Wexler files catalog it as 1960 25 cents Pr WDDR-003. Obverse die markers are not significant, but the reverse carries two short die gouges: one south of the space between the E and P of EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), and another south of the upper C in AMERICA. The center-directed spread pattern — where the secondary hub impression is displaced inward relative to the primary — produces an unusual visual effect where doubled elements appear to contract toward the die center rather than expand outward, compressing the secondary image inside the primary on inscription letters. The triple cross-reference across CONECA (2-R-II), Cherrypickers (FS-801), and Wexler (WDDR-003) confirms this as a recognized and significant variety commanding attention from the three major attribution authorities. Struck as a proof at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver — the final era before the 1965 composition change — the 1960 proof quarter's mirrored surfaces enhance the visibility of the inward-directed spread on the eagle's wing details and the surrounding inscription text against the reflective fields.
