1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team, the 1960 Proof Roosevelt Dime WDDR-003 displays Class II distorted hub doubling directed toward the center, visible on UNITED STATES, the olive leaves and branch, and E PLU of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Class II doubling results from the hub flexing during the die impression process, creating distortion-based displacement rather than the clean rotational separation of Class I varieties. The center-directed spread produces an inward-leaning effect on the affected design elements. A diagnostic die marker on the reverse — a horizontal die scratch on the top of the T in UNITED — assists with attribution and provides a quick preliminary identification point. Photography of this variety was contributed by Brian Ribar, and no other cross-references are currently known beyond the Wexler designation. The 1960 Proof Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 90% silver, and proof doubled die varieties from the late 1950s and early 1960s are extensively documented due to the relatively large proof set mintages of this era and the systematic examination that proof collectors apply to their holdings. The olive leaves and branch — design elements central to John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime reverse — provide detailed reference geometry for evaluating the center-directed distortion pattern.
