1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1960 10¢ Pr WDDR-002, this 1960 Proof Roosevelt Dime exhibits very strong doubled die reverse characteristics with the spread directed toward the center of the coin. The doubling is visible on UNITED STATES OF, E PLURIB of E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE, the left dot, the left side of the flame, the left side of the torch holder, the base of the torch holder, the tip of the upper right outer leaf, and all details of the left branch and leaves. The breadth of affected design elements across nearly the entire reverse makes this one of the more dramatic doubled die reverse varieties in the Roosevelt Dime proof series. Obverse die markers include northwest-to-southeast die scratches on the neck behind the ear, while the reverse carries a large die gouge between M and E of AMERICA positioned between the top and center of the letters. As a proof issue, this dime was struck on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies at the Philadelphia Mint, producing the mirror-like fields and frosted design elements characteristic of proof coinage. The 1960 proof dime was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, as the transition to clad coinage would not occur until 1965. The very strong centerward spread affecting the torch, branches, and multiple inscriptions provides numerous diagnostic areas for attribution.
