Description

Documented on the Proof Large Date, WDDR-018 on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent records this doubled die reverse under the earlier hub type used during the first phase of Philadelphia's proof production. The reverse displays a spread towards the center on the U of UNITED, ONE CENT, the bottom of the Memorial, the designer's initials, and slightly on AMERICA — characteristics matching those recorded on the Proof Small Date counterpart that shares the same Wexler designation. The centerward displacement across these multiple design elements reflects a hub misalignment broad enough to influence text, architectural features, and attribution initials simultaneously. No significant obverse markers have been noted, directing attribution efforts to the reverse. Three die gouges anchor the identification: a short vertical gouge on the upper right cornice, a small gouge between the E and N of CENT, and a gouge to the right of the center of the T in CENT. These three diagnostics cluster around the denomination, making them convenient to examine in a single field of view under magnification. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1960 1¢ Pr WDDR-018 with no other known cross-references, the Large Date proof hub is identified by the taller 1 digit and lower-sitting 0, and the approximately 3,000-impression proof die life limits the surviving population of this variety.
