RIDB-1c-1960-05(LD) (LD) Retained Interior Die Break
Error
Description
Documented by Cuds on Coins with the cross reference date of January 6, 2018, RIDB-1c-1960-05(LD) on the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date records another retained interior die break from the Large Date production run — a die failure where an interior fragment of the die surface cracked and shifted while remaining attached to the die face. Coins struck from this damaged die show a localized area of distortion where the retained fragment displaced the design, creating a visible anomaly that distinguishes these specimens from normal strikes. A notable additional feature of this die is a reverse die crack described as a "black arrow" — a crack in the reverse die that has been specifically called out in the attribution notes, likely because its shape or direction resembles an arrow and serves as a useful secondary diagnostic for identifying coins struck from this particular die pair. The Large Date regular strike designation places this error in Philadelphia's first production phase of 1960, and as with all retained interior die breaks, the error represents an intermediate stage of die failure between initial cracking and the complete fragment separation that would produce a full cud. Cataloged with no other known cross-references, the combination of the retained interior break and the distinctive "black arrow" reverse die crack makes this die pairing relatively straightforward to identify.
