Description
Nineteenth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1960 Jefferson nickel, WDDR-019 presents very close Class II (Distorted Hub) doubling on the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Felix Schlag's Jefferson nickel design, selected through a 1938 public competition, pairs Thomas Jefferson's portrait on the obverse with his architectural masterpiece Monticello on the reverse, providing finely detailed lettering and architectural elements that serve as sensitive indicators of hub doubling events. Class II doubling results from a distortion of the hub itself rather than a pivot or offset between hub and die, producing a characteristic spreading pattern where the doubled image radiates outward from a central point of distortion rather than showing uniform directional displacement. The very close spread classification indicates the primary and secondary images nearly overlap, creating thickened letter strokes on E PLURIBUS UNUM rather than clearly separated duplicate impressions. Philadelphia struck approximately 55.4 million nickels in 1960, a moderate production run for the era. The reverse die markers provide essential secondary diagnostics for confirming the correct die: two die scratches appear on the left side of the long left window of Monticello, a die dot sits above the I of AMERICA, and a die scratch runs to the left of the long right window. These markers, concentrated around the architectural window details of Monticello's facade, create a unique fingerprint for this specific working die that allows attribution even on specimens where the subtle E PLURIBUS UNUM doubling may be difficult to resolve. The obverse carries no noted die markers. Collectors should use 15-20x magnification focused on the E PLURIBUS UNUM letters, looking for broadened strokes consistent with Class II distorted hub characteristics.
