Classified as Class II distorted hub doubling, the 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel WDDR-012 exhibits very close doubling on UNITED on Felix Schlag's reverse depicting Thomas Jefferson's Monticello estate. Class II doubling results from physical distortion of the working hub — typically caused by excessive annealing or mechanical stress — which shifts design elements in non-uniform directions across the die face. The very close spread requires careful magnification to distinguish the faint secondary contours alongside the primary letterforms. Reverse die markers include a die scratch above the left arch and a second die scratch to the left of the small left window on the Monticello facade. No significant obverse markers have been noted. As a proof issue, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on specially polished planchets using polished dies, yielding mirror-like fields and frosted design elements.
