1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
A proof-only variety from the San Francisco Mint, this 1960 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse is attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 17-R-II-C. Classified as Class II Distorted Hub Doubling, the mechanism occurs when the hub itself is distorted during die-making rather than shifted between impressions. A nice spread toward center appears on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and all of MONTICELLO, decreasing from left to right. Very close spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM follows the same diminishing pattern, consistent with Class II characteristics. Obverse die markers include a diagonal die gouge left of the lower I in IN, and a short diagonal gouge below and between IN and GOD. Reverse markers include a short die gouge below the first U of PLURIBUS, a die gouge dot between the lower D of UNITED and the first S of STATES, and a die gouge dot on the rim above the right side of M in UNUM. As a proof issue struck on polished planchets, the mirror fields make doubled die details especially visible under magnification.
Die Markers

- Reverse: Short die gouge below first U of PLURIBUS; die gouge (dot) between lower portion of D of UNITED and first S of STATES; die gouge (dot) on rim above right side of M of UNUM.
