1960 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

WDDR-002 on the 1960 Proof Jefferson Nickel was struck with polished dies and burnished planchets at the Philadelphia Mint. The variety is a Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling: a constant spread toward the center shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the MO and LO portions of MONTICELLO, as well as on both sides of the Monticello building. The inward-directed center spread affects both the surrounding legends and the central architectural device simultaneously, indicating a distortion event that propagated across the full reverse design. A close spread also shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, where the doubling decreases from left to right across the motto. Die markers confirm attribution: on the obverse, a curving die scratch appears at the front of the coat on the lower lapel; on the reverse, a short die gouge is positioned above and between the P and L of PLURIBUS, a vertical die gouge sits at the rim between OF and AMERICA, and a heavy die gouge appears at the rim in an adjacent location.
