1960 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Featuring a combination of inscription doubling and die separation on botanical elements, DDR-008 on the 1960 Philadelphia Washington Quarter exhibits light spread on the lower portion of QUARTER DOLLAR alongside splits on both the olive and laurel branch stems and the R of AMERICA. Timothy Wissert reported this variety. The "splits" on both stems represent die separation — fine cracks or separation lines within the branch stems where the hub doubling created enough offset to fracture the engraved line into two parallel traces — a particularly striking diagnostic because the thin, continuous botanical lines are among the most delicate features on John Flanagan's reverse and respond dramatically to even minor displacement. The split R of AMERICA follows the same principle: the letter's fine strokes separated into doubled traces at the point where the secondary hub impression diverged from the primary. Limiting the spread to the lower portion of QUARTER DOLLAR indicates the hub displacement produced its most visible effects in the lower zone of the die face, where the denomination text and branch stems are concentrated, while the upper inscriptions apparently received offset below the detection threshold. The 1960 Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver at 6.25 grams at the Philadelphia Mint, and DDR-008's high catalog number reflects thorough documentation of this date's reverse varieties. Examination should begin at the olive and laurel branch stems under 7x to 10x magnification, where the split lines are most visually dramatic, before confirming the light spread on the lower QUARTER DOLLAR lettering and the split R of AMERICA.
