RIDB-1c-1960D-02(LD) (LD) Retained Interior Die Break
Error
Description
Documented by CudsOnCoins as RIDB-1c-1960D-02(LD), this retained interior die break appears on the 1960-D Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date, with no additional cross-reference assigned. A retained interior die break differs from a cud in a critical way: while a cud involves complete separation of die metal at the rim, a retained break occurs entirely within the die field where the fractured piece remains trapped in position. The broken fragment shifts slightly under repeated striking force, producing a raised irregular feature on the struck coin that follows the fracture line. On the 1960-D Large Date cent, the Large Date subtype represents the earlier production phase at Denver before the mid-year hub change introduced the Small Date design. Dies used during this first phase endured sustained production runs, and interior die fractures developed as metal fatigue accumulated in areas of high stress concentration within the design elements. Retained interior die breaks are generally scarcer than rim cuds because the interior die metal is better supported than the rim area.
